The seven deadly sins and the four horsemen of the apocalypse make regular appearances as both minibosses and floor bosses. At the same time, Isaac can make deals with the devil: by sacrificing some of his permanent heart containers, Satan will grant Isaac powerful, evil equipment. Items such as the Blood of the Martyr (Jesus’ crown of thorns) and the Wafer (a communion wafer) provide Isaac with more stats to better face the challenges below. He can challenge angels for the right to face Satan’s true form. Isaac regularly does battle with demonic creatures. The game is also rife with Christian symbolism. Not my fault I’m the biggest and the strongest. No other game allows me to power up my character by having them contemplate torn family photos and divorce papers, making them more depressed and thereby increasing my attack speed. This gross-out design that is disgusting, hilarious, and to a degree, eminently practical is Isaac’s trademark.
Nothing is sacred in Isaac’s quest for survival. The same with urine, blood, and many other unmentionables. It can be a weapon to fight your enemies with. The game weaponizes unorthodox things for example, poop is not just digestive waste, it’s an enemy, it’s a boss, it’s an asset. Isaac will explore a procedurally-generated dungeon in the depths of his home, using everything at his disposal: coins to buy items, keys to open doors, and tears to shoot at foes. The game is an action roguelike fans of the Legend of Zelda franchise will likely instantly note that Isaac plays and controls much like the NES installations. Trapped in his room with nowhere left to run, he finds a trapdoor below a rug, flings it opens, and jumps into the unknown depths below. Just as the biblical Isaac was to be made a sacrifice, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth tells the story of 5-year old Isaac, who realizes his fate in the nick of time and decides to escape before his mother can complete said sacrifice as proof of her faith.
